What does stamped concrete cost in Texas?

Stamped concrete cost in Texas starts at $10.48 a square foot with us for a stamped patio, and $12.00 once you add integral color. A 300 square foot Sherman patio runs $1,750 to $5,850 before the drive cost, which is our trip out to your site. That range runs from a plain broom finish up to a full stamped patio.

A stamped driveway starts at $12.57 a square foot. That price has a 5 inch slab, a rebar grid, and a 4 inch gravel base in it. The sealer is extra. A 600 square foot driveway runs $4,350 to $10,300 before the drive cost, from plain broom up to full stamped. Setup and the drive go on top of each per-foot price here. Where you are in Texas changes the drive, not the base rate. The ground changes too: on black clay, a rebar grid and a deeper base go on top.

Pattern picks are on the Texas decorative concrete page.

Pool deck500 to 1,500 sf$12.00
Ranch property feature400 to 2,000 sfPriced per job

The price per foot drops as the job gets bigger. Forms, stamp mats, and the crew’s trip cost about the same for a 250 sf slab as for a 2,000 sf one.

Want the look on the slab you have? A stamped concrete overlay is a thin patterned layer on top, with no new pour. Ours starts at $6.14 a square foot. The old slab has to be sound. See the concrete overlay cost guide.

How does the pattern change the price?

The pattern is the biggest thing you control, and it comes in three levels.

Basic is one stamp pattern, one base color, and one release agent. The release is a powder that keeps the mats from sticking and leaves a second shade in the low spots. Think running bond brick borders, plain ashlar walkways, or a broom slab with a stamped border. Most East Texas driveway extensions around Paris, Mount Pleasant, and Marshall land here, and so do most farm patios in Erath and Palo Pinto counties. A basic patio starts at $10.48 a square foot.

Medium adds integral color, which is color mixed all the way through the concrete. Most North Texas patios and pool decks land here, and they start at $12.00. Ashlar slate and random stone lead. Saltillo-style brick shows up in Wichita Falls neighborhoods with Spanish revival homes. Big ranch flagstone patterns are common on acreage in Cooke, Grayson, and Fannin counties, where a patio can run 600 to 1,200 sf.

Premium means three or more colors, hand-carved details, or a custom medallion. Think a barndominium showpiece patio in Stephenville or Mineral Wells, a Sherman driveway with a compass rose, or a restaurant entry in Longview. We price this level per job, after we see the drawing.

How does the Texas sun change the sealer?

Our part of Texas gets more UV, the sun’s fading rays, than any other place we work. In North Texas summers, west-facing slabs often top 140 degrees at the surface, per NWS Norman climate summaries for the North Texas plains. That heat breaks down a basic acrylic sealer in 4 to 6 years.

Wichita Falls gets more than 3,000 hours of sun a year, and Texarkana about 2,800. Springfield, Missouri, gets about 2,650. Under a basic acrylic sealer, dark colors like slate and charcoal fade by year 5 to 7 in North Texas. In Springfield, that fade waits until year 10 to 12.

Our Texas spec is an acrylic-urethane hybrid sealer with a titanium dioxide UV blocker. It runs 28 to 32 percent solids. The Mid-South default is 25 percent. More solids means more of what we roll on stays on the slab. It costs a little more on the first coat. It also stretches the color’s life from 5 to 7 years to 10 to 12. We reseal every 18 months in Texas, not every 24 to 30 months like in milder states.

For a ranch patio in full sun with no shade, pick a lighter color: warm tan, light slate, or terracotta. Light colors show fade later than dark ones.

A Texas stamped bid with basic acrylic sealer fails in the sun by year 6

The most common shortcut on a cheap Texas stamped job is a basic acrylic sealer at 18 to 20 percent solids. The first reseal at year 2 looks fine. By year 6, the sealer breaks down faster than a reseal can keep up, and the color fades. Stripping it and resealing with the right sealer means paying twice. Ask every Texas bidder to write down the sealer type, its percent solids, and whether it has a UV blocker.

How does expansive black clay change the base under a Texas slab?

The clay under North Texas matters even more than the sun to what you pay up front. Expansive black clay, called gumbo locally, swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries. It’s the main soil on the North Texas Blackland Prairie, which runs from about Sherman south.

How much it moves. Soil engineers rate clay with a plasticity index (PI). The higher the number, the more it swells. Gumbo often tops 35, per Texas AgriLife Extension data, and it can reach 50 to 70 on the worst sites. Untreated gumbo can move 4 to 6 inches up and down in one wet-dry cycle. That’s more than three times what Arkansas Delta clay or Mississippi Black Prairie clay does.

A deeper base. Over gumbo, a stamped slab needs 8 to 12 inches of packed crushed stone under it. Stable soil gets by with 2 to 4 inches. Around Sherman, Denison, and Gainesville, where gumbo is at its worst, we use crushed limestone. Our standard 4 inch gravel base runs $1.20 a square foot and is already in the driveway price. We price the deeper gumbo base per job, after we see the ground.

Tighter joints. Joints go every 8 feet at most, not the usual 12. Isolation joints are soft strips that let two pieces of concrete move on their own. They go against every slab edge, wall, and footing next to the new slab. A missing one against the house slab is the top cause of the cracked stamped patios we see on North Texas repair calls.

More steel. Wire mesh isn’t enough on gumbo. Our spec is a rebar grid with bars 18 inches apart, at the least. On a patio, that grid adds $1.80 a square foot over the standard fiber mesh. On slabs over 1,200 sf, we recommend post-tension cables, priced per job.

Where gumbo ends. The line runs roughly along I-30. East of Paris, the ground turns to Piney Woods sandy loam. That soil takes the standard 4 inch base and 12-foot joints.

Rain and humidity across Texas

East Texas Piney Woods gets 45 to 55 inches of rain a year, per NWS Shreveport climate data. North Texas around Wichita Falls is drier, at 30 to 35 inches. There, a dry summer pour can need a fine fog spray while we finish. It keeps the top from drying too fast and cracking. In July and August, we pour at dawn when the heat index calls for it.

How do Texas prices compare to the national average?

Stamped concrete in Texas runs about at the national average, and in the same band as our OKC work. Higher-cost markets charge more for the same pattern: $11 to $26 a square foot in Denver and Atlanta, and $14 to $30 in the Northeast and coastal California.

Labor around Wichita Falls and Texarkana costs less than average. The UV sealer, gumbo work, and hot-weather mix eat up that savings. Ready-mix concrete costs about the same everywhere, around $135 to $165 a cubic yard delivered.

How is the drive handled on a Texas job?

Our Wichita Falls team covers North Texas ranch country and the Red River counties. Our Texarkana team runs east on I-30 and I-20. The drive cost is its own line, and the quote tool figures it from your address.

What’s in a Texas stamped quote, and what isn’t?

Included:

  • Layout, forms, cleanup, and form removal
  • A 4 inch patio or 5 to 6 inch driveway pour, with a summer hot-weather mix (a set retarder and ice-cooled water)
  • Wire mesh or fiber, or a rebar grid on gumbo sites
  • A base color and the release agent
  • Stamping with professional stamp mats
  • On a patio, the first coat of our UV-blocking sealer (on a driveway, sealer is its own line)
  • Joints laid out for your soil (8 feet on gumbo, 12 feet on Piney Woods ground)
  • Written care steps, with the 18-month reseal schedule

Not included (each is its own line):

  • Tearing out old concrete: $2.30 a square foot for a 4 inch slab, more for a thicker one
  • A gumbo base deeper than the standard 4 inches
  • Post-tension on gumbo slabs over 1,200 sf
  • Accent colors beyond the base color and release
  • Custom ranch-brand medallions
  • Drainage fixes or French drains on low ranch sites
  • Future reseals on the 18-month cycle
  • City permits where needed

Other than the tear-out, we price each of these per job, after we see the site.

A 400 sf patio with us builds for $2,250 to $7,550 before the drive cost. That range runs from plain broom up to full stamped.

Stamped holds up better here. One solid slab with a rebar grid rides out gumbo, while the sand between pavers washes out. Pavers on North Texas gumbo often need part of the patio releveled by year 5. Flagstone cracks from the heat of 140-degree summer surfaces.

Why do Texas stamped concrete bids vary so much?

Three things explain most of the gap between bids.

Does the bid deal with the gumbo? A North Texas bid that doesn’t list base depth, joint spacing, and steel leaves the clay problem unpaid. Wire mesh on gumbo is a crack waiting for the second wet-dry cycle. On sites with a PI of 35 or more, a rebar grid is a must. Get all three in writing.

Does the bid name the sealer? A basic acrylic sealer leaves 5 to 6 years of color life unprotected under Texas sun. The UV-blocking hybrid is the right call here.

Does the crew beat the heat? A summer pour that starts at 10 AM in August has a finishing window the heat will close early. We start at dawn and use a retarder mix from May through September.

Frequently asked questions

How much does stamped concrete cost per square foot in Texas?

A stamped patio in Texas starts at $10.48 a square foot with us. That covers the slab, the stamp, a base color, the release, and a sealer coat. Integral color is color mixed all the way through the concrete. Add it, and the patio starts at $12.00. A stamped driveway starts at $12.57 a square foot. It's a thicker slab with a rebar grid and a gravel base. A 300 square foot patio runs $1,750 to $5,850 before the drive cost, which is our trip out to your site. That range runs from a plain broom finish up to a full stamped patio. We price work with several colors, hand-carved details, or a ranch-brand medallion per job, after we see the layout. Where you are in Texas changes the drive, not the base rate. The ground changes too: black clay can add a rebar grid and a deeper base. We don't take work in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, or San Antonio.

How does Texas UV intensity affect stamped concrete cost?

The sun is the biggest long-run worry for stamped concrete in our part of Texas. In North Texas summers, west-facing slabs often top 140 degrees at the surface, per NWS Norman climate summaries for the North Texas plains. The Wichita Falls and Texarkana areas get 2,800 to 3,000 or more hours of sun a year. That's the most of any place we work. The UV, the sun's fading rays, breaks down a basic acrylic sealer in 4 to 6 years. It fades dark colors in 5 to 7. We use an acrylic-urethane hybrid sealer with a titanium dioxide UV blocker. It runs 28 to 32 percent solids, where the Mid-South default is 25 percent. It costs a little more on the first coat. It also stretches the color's life from about 5 to 7 years to about 10 to 12. In Texas we reseal every 18 months, not the 24 to 30 months common in Tennessee or Mississippi. For a ranch patio in full sun, we suggest a lighter color, like warm tan, light slate, or terracotta. Light colors show fade later than dark slate or charcoal.

What is included in a Bel Covo stamped concrete quote in Texas?

A Texas stamped quote includes layout and forms, and a 4 inch patio pour or a 5 to 6 inch driveway pour. In summer months over 90 degrees, we use a hot-weather mix with a set retarder and ice-cooled water. It also covers fiber or wire mesh, or a rebar grid on black clay sites. A base color, the release agent, and stamping are in it. On a patio, so is the first coat of our UV-blocking sealer. On a driveway, the sealer is its own line. Joints are laid out for your soil, with extra care on the black clay across North Texas. In July and August we pour at dawn when the heat index calls for it. Cleanup, form removal, and written cure and care steps, including the 18-month reseal schedule, are in there too. Some things are not included. Tearing out old concrete, a deeper base on gumbo, and post-tension on high-swell clay are each their own line. So are extra accent colors, drainage fixes, future reseals, and city permits where needed.

How does Texas sub-region affect the stamped concrete price?

Two teams cover our Texas work. Our Wichita Falls team covers North Texas ranch country and the Red River counties. That takes in Wichita Falls, Sherman, Denison, Gainesville, Stephenville, and Mineral Wells. Barndominium work runs heavy on rural acreage in Erath, Palo Pinto, and Cooke counties. Our Texarkana team runs east on I-30 and I-20 through Mount Pleasant, Sulphur Springs, Paris, Marshall, and Longview. The per-foot rate is the same in both areas. What changes is the drive cost, our trip out to your site. The quote tool figures it from your address. The ground changes too. Black clay in North Texas needs a deeper base and more steel. East Texas Piney Woods gets 45 to 55 inches of rain a year, which shifts cure timing. We don't take work in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, or San Antonio. Those cities have plenty of local crews. The miles from our Texas teams don't pencil out at a fair price.

How does expansive black clay across North Texas affect stamped concrete?

Expansive black clay, called gumbo locally, is the main soil on the North Texas Blackland Prairie. That runs from about Sherman south through Dallas toward Waco. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Its plasticity index (PI), a number for how much a clay swells, often tops 35 per Texas AgriLife Extension data. It can reach 50 to 70 on the worst sites. That's the high end in the country. Untreated gumbo can move 4 to 6 inches up and down in one wet-dry cycle. That's more than three times what Arkansas Delta clay or Mississippi Black Prairie clay does. A stamped slab over gumbo needs 8 to 12 inches of packed crushed stone under it, not the 2 to 4 inches that works on stable soil. Joints go every 8 feet, with isolation joints against every slab edge and footing next to it. Steel moves up from wire mesh to a rebar grid at least. We recommend post-tension on slabs over 1,200 square feet. On a patio, the rebar grid adds $1.80 a square foot over fiber. We price the deeper base per job, after we see the ground. Sherman, Denison, Gainesville, and south Wichita Falls sites all have some gumbo.
