Concrete grinding in Oklahoma: the slab, ground and ready
Concrete grinding in Oklahoma from our crews runs about $1.29 a square foot for the field, before the drive cost (our trip out to your site). We call the service Prep Grinding. Diamond heads grind the top of your slab open and leave it clean and rough, ready for the next floor. No coating, sealer, or polish goes down, because that part comes later from whoever lays the next floor.
Most people never need this as its own service. Our garage floor coatings, polished concrete, stained concrete, and concrete overlays each come with their own grinding. Prep Grinding is for a slab that needs the grind and nothing else, most often because someone else will put the next floor down.
Bel Covo has worked on concrete floors since 2004, and across all our work we’ve installed over 3 million square feet. Our shop is in Prague, Oklahoma. We’ve seen what a rushed prep job does to a floor two winters later. A good grind is the part nobody sees, and it’s the part everything else sits on.
What is concrete grinding?
Concrete grinding is a machine job. Metal diamond heads spin flat against the slab and grind off its soft top skin, called the cream, and the dirt, grime, and smooth, closed face of the slab come off with it. What’s left is fresh, open concrete with a little tooth to it, a bit like fine sandpaper.
That matters because a new floor sticks to the slab, not to the dust and film on top of it. Coatings, glue, and stain all need open concrete to grab. On a slab that was never ground, they end up holding on to the dirt instead of the concrete.
The trade grades how rough a ground slab is with a CSP number, which stands for concrete surface profile. The scale comes from ICRI Technical Guideline 310.2R, written by the concrete repair trade group. Our own epoxy floors go down on CSP 3. Prep Grinding leaves a coating-ready profile, and if your next floor needs a set CSP number, tell us when you ask for a price.
What does Prep Grinding include?
Prep Grinding has two parts, and every job gets both:
- Field grinding, $1.27 a square foot. This is the open floor. A big diamond grinder works across the slab until the whole surface is open and clean.
- Edge grinding, $1.33 a linear foot. A big grinder can’t get tight to a wall, so the strip along each wall gets its own pass, right up to the wall. A linear foot means each foot of wall the crew grinds along.
Our machines hook up to vacuums, so dust stays under control the whole time. When we leave, the slab is bare, ground, and ready for whoever comes next.
Prep Grinding stops at the grind
It's surface grinding only. We don't put down any coating, sealer, hardener, or polish, and we don't patch. Crack repair, leveling, structural slab repair, taking off an old coating, and moving furniture or fixtures are not part of it. If your slab needs any of those, tell us up front so the price fits the job.
Who Prep Grinding fits
Prep Grinding fits when the grind is the only part you need from us. These are the usual cases:
- Builders and general contractors whose flooring crew wants a ground slab before they start.
- Flooring crews putting down a floor that bonds to the concrete, who would rather not haul a grinder to the job.
- Owners who plan to coat or stain the floor themselves and want the hard part done first.
If we’re putting down the finish too, skip this service. Our coatings, polish, stain, and overlays already include the grind in their rate, and there’s no reason to pay for it twice.
How does a Prep Grinding job go?
- Tell us about the slab. Give us the size, the length of wall, and what floor goes down next. Tell us what’s on the slab now, too, like paint, an old coating, glue, or a sealer. Taking an old coating off is separate work, so we need to know about it before we price the job.
- Clear the room. Moving furniture or fixtures isn’t part of Prep Grinding, so clear the floor before we come.
- We grind the field, then the edges. Diamond heads take the slab down to fresh concrete while the vacuums pull the dust.
Check the grind with a few drops of water
Put drops of water on the ground concrete in a few spots. Each drop has to darken the concrete and soak in within 60 seconds. If a drop beads up, the surface is still closed. It's a quick check you or your next installer can do before the new floor goes down.
How much does concrete grinding cost in Oklahoma?
Concrete grinding in Oklahoma runs about $1.29 a square foot for the field. That figure counts setup spread over a typical job, so it sits a little above the field rate in the table. Edges are priced on their own, by the foot of wall.
| Line | What it covers | Our rate |
|---|---|---|
| Field Prep Grinding | The open floor, ground to a coating-ready profile | $1.27 per SF |
| Edge Prep Grinding | The strip along each wall, ground up to the wall | $1.33 per linear foot |
A 1,000 SF slab runs about $1,300 for the field grinding, before the drive. Edges add $1.33 for each foot of wall the crew grinds along, so a long, narrow room costs a bit more than a square room with the same floor size. Every quote shows the drive on its own line. It’s not hidden in the per-foot rate.
Three things move your total:
- Size. Bigger floors cost a little less per square foot, because setup spreads across more floor.
- Wall length. A room with lots of walls, posts, or corners has more edge to grind.
- The drive. It depends on how far your slab is from us, and it shows up on its own line.

Where do we grind concrete in Oklahoma?
We grind slabs in OKC, Tulsa, and the towns around our shop in Prague, from home garages to big commercial floors. Outside central Oklahoma? We look at those jobs one at a time. Call (888) 852-3528 to check before you schedule.
Before we load a grinder, ask whoever lays your next floor what surface they need. That one answer tells us how the slab should look when we leave, and it saves you from paying to grind it twice.
