A plateau county seat where retirement homes set the work
Crossville is the Cumberland County seat, where US-70 and US-127 cross on top of the Cumberland Plateau and I-40 runs along the north edge of town. We’re a concrete contractor in Crossville, TN, and the town sits about 70 miles west of our Knoxville team. Retirement homes drive most of the work. That means garage floor coatings, patio pours, and polished floors inside the house.
Fairfield Glade, a big retirement community just outside town, anchors that home market. Lake Tansi Village adds a lake community on the plateau. Out in the county, people building on acreage put up shops and barndominiums too.
Who coats garage floors in Fairfield Glade and Lake Tansi?
We do. A garage in either place usually calls for a polyaspartic or epoxy floor coating over a ground slab. Most get RESA Flake, our flake-and-resin garage floor. We grind the slab so the coating can bite in, put down a primer and a base coat, and throw colored flakes until the floor won’t take any more. A clear topcoat locks them in. The standard build is epoxy, which does best indoors. The premium build is polyaspartic, and it’s the one we’d pick for a garage, because it cures fast and holds up to hot tires. A flake floor runs $8.55 to $10.39 a square foot. If you’d rather skip the flakes, a solid-color polyaspartic floor is the other garage option.
A shop, a craft room, or a showpiece space can take one of our other two epoxy floors. RESA Quartz casts colored quartz sand into the resin, so it grips underfoot and won’t soak up spills, while RESA Metallic swirls like water under a clear urethane topcoat. Both run $6.08 to $10.17 a square foot. Polished slabs fit new builds and redone lake homes. They run $3.83 to $6.25 a square foot, and how much stone shows and how much shine you want decide where yours falls in that range.
What does the plateau’s sandstone mean for a slab pour?
The Cumberland Plateau here sits on Pennsylvanian sandstone, the same rock behind the area’s Crab Orchard Stone. That’s a mottled, high-silica sandstone quarried along US 70E toward the Crab Orchard community. The cap rock is tough. When it shows up at footing depth, it has to be broken out as rock instead of just dug, and the depth where it shows up can change from one corner of a pad to the next.
Clay soils sit on top of the sandstone. They soak up the plateau’s wet winters, then shrink in the dry spells of summer, and year after year that cycle loosens pads and wears away a base that wasn’t packed right. So we pack the base under a driveway or slab to a checked density before we pour. That guards against the seasonal movement that cracks an under-prepped slab.
Prep before the pour on plateau clay
Crossville's clay sits on the sandstone, and grading alone won't settle it. We bring the clay to the right moisture and pack it. A slab poured over loose, wet clay will move with the seasons. We roll the base with a heavy load to find soft spots and check its density before the forms go down.
How does Crab Orchard stone shape the local aggregate?
The quarries around Crossville cut flagstone, field stone, and building sandstone. They don’t crush stone for concrete. So ready-mix for Cumberland County pours brings in crushed limestone from the Mississippian limestone along the plateau’s edges, including Rogers Group - Harriman Quarry, about 30 miles east. A polished floor here shows a warm stone with a mixed look, from that limestone plus the plateau’s quartz-rich rock. It’s not the cool gray polish of the Nashville Basin.
What does concrete work cost on a Cumberland Homesteads cottage?
The Cumberland Homesteads area has a lot of stone cottages from the 1930s, and fixing one up can mean working over an old concrete floor. On a slab poured before 1940, we run a moisture test before we pick a coating. That’s ASTM F1869, a calcium chloride test that measures the vapor coming up through the slab. Vapor the spec ignores can lift a new finish in one season.
Concrete overlays rebuild a worn or broken surface for less than a full tear-out, at $4.48 to $10.44 a square foot. In a Homesteads cottage, an overlay gives you a smooth floor that suits the age of the house. The original slab stays put.
What do driveways and shop slabs need on the plateau?
The base under a driveway decides how long it lasts. Skimp on packing the clay and a driveway can crack in five years. Pack it right and it can go 20. Out in the county, shop and barndominium slabs start at $7.04 a square foot for a 6-inch slab with a rebar grid. Our Pour-4-Polish process puts the slab and the finish coat under one spec, so the slab is built for the coating before the first truck shows up and nothing gets lost in a handoff.
Scheduling on the Cumberland Plateau
Crossville sits higher than Knoxville, so nights run colder from late October through March. A cold-weather pour up here needs insulated blankets and a longer watch on the cure. We plan the pour date around the plateau's weather, not just the drive.
Our Knoxville team in Cumberland County
Our Knoxville team covers Cumberland County, along I-40 and US 70. We pour and finish driveways, garage slabs and coatings, polished concrete, epoxy systems, shop slabs, patios, and concrete overlays across the county.
Small-job pairing for Cumberland County
Crossville jobs come from our Knoxville team, which is more than an hour's drive. A small patio or a one-car garage floor on its own trip may not make sense on price. We quote every size straight. Small jobs often pair well with another Cumberland County job that week, and we'll tell you if pairing is likely to help your timing.
The rest of our East Tennessee work is on the Tennessee page.
Nearby cities we also serve from the Knoxville team: Cookeville, Maryville, and Athens.
